Dear Colleagues and Partners,

The security, safety and quality of food are always in the front line of the attention of the general public and regulators. The order of importance very depending on the socio-economic conditions. Government officials and producers are continuously facing with newer and newer challenges in assuring the safety of food due to emerging and prevailing risks. The analysts are playing key role in identifying new substances and detect unexpected old ones which may present hazard for consumers or adversely affect the self-life of food. A few cases from the recent issues (microbial effects of packing materials, monomers, softeners penetrating to food from packing materials; contaminated feed leading to unacceptable residues in animal products, fata microbial contamination spread by propagation materials).

Regulators and official control bodies must be at continuous alert to make timely actions against scrupulous, irresponsible, only profit oriented producers applying unauthorised ingredients in food and feed including those used to protect of plants and livestock. The technological developments, such as introduction of nanoparticles in food, application of new technologies and packing materials for extending storability and improving the quality of food require close cooperation of researchers, manufacturers and regulators to carefully assess the safety of food produced.

The International Conference on Food Safety and Regulatory Measures in 6-8 June 2016 offers a unique forum for all stakeholders to learn from each other’s practice, exchange experience and establish personal contacts. The success of the previous congress held in Birmingham in 2015 guarantees that taking part in the forthcoming conference will provide excellent opportunities for all of these.

I would like to congratulate OMICS International for organising Food Safety 2016 conference scheduled for June 06-08, 2016 in London, UK, with the theme “Global Forum for Innovations in Food Safety and Quality.”

A new system of Law has been created in the last twenty years in Europe: Food Law. In the wake of the dioxin crisis and BSE in the nineties, a new Law based on science was required, ensuring that foods placed on the market were safe, information about food was accurate and quality was guaranteed. As a consequence, new legislation has been adopted and brand new specific legal principles have been created regulating aspects such as stricter control of food hygiene, improved safety in the use of ingredients and the use of claims related to health.

Innovation in food requires a clear legal environment allowing new products to be created and placed on the market while, at the same time, protecting the health and interests of the consumer. Food Law is closely related to science and regulates the most important of all human economic and cultural activities, namely the production and trade of foodstuffs.

I sincerely hope that this conference will deliberate on various issues that need to be addressed while increasing production and come up with recommendations that will lead to sustainably increasing production without leaving its ecological footprint.

Track 1 Food Safety Regulatory Affairs

Food safety Conference is a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent foodborne illness. This includes a number of routines that should be followed to avoid potentially severe health food hazards. The tracks within this line of thought are safety between food industry and the market and then between the market and the consumer. In considering industry to market practices, food safety considerations include the origins of food including the practices relating to food labeling, food hygiene, food additives and pesticide residues, as well as policies on biotechnology and food and guidelines for the management of governmental import and export inspection and certification systems for foods. In considering market to consumer practices, the usual thought is that food ought to be safe in the market and the concern is safe delivery and preparation of the food for the consumer. The nature of some current food safety regulatory issues will change with time include regulation of genetically modified foods including labelling, nutrition and health claims, rapid response to food emergencies, food borne disease outbreaks and emerging pathogens.

Track 2 Food Preservation, Quality Standard and Food Management Systems

Food preservation on the other hand is primarily aiming at minimizing post harvest losses of food while improving the shelf-life and value addition. As food safety concerns started to surface with food borne illnesses, food safety management systems slowly evolved and developed to today's sophisticated levels. Food quality standards have benchmarked the required level of food quality parameters, linking the safety management systems to the desired quality. Considering the significance of quality standards and food management system food safety meetings maintains the food safety and security. Abstracts are invited from the research outputs from these areas.

Track 3 Environmental Protection Co-Management with Food Safety

Sustainability of global food production and its quality depend to a greater extent on the quality of the environment. Today the quality of the environment in which the food production depends on is at a critical margin since environmental degradation and pollution of environment is increasing in an alarming rate. Pollutants in the environment are contaminating our food resources and public health problems associated with such contaminants are increasing. The alarming increase of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, chronic kidney disease, heart diseases in human populations in many geographical locations of the world could also be linked to environmental contaminants associated with our food resources. Food events are organized in which abstracts are invited from the above discipline which links food environment protection and public health issues.

Track 4 Challenges to Food Hygiene and Safety

Food safety challenges differ by region, the responsibility for safe and nutritious food is shared by all players in the food system and the challenge is to build comprehensive food management systems that ensure the long term involvement and commitment of all concerned parties. Problems in food safety show no boundaries. While biological, chemical and physical food hazards of continue to pose significant threats to food safety across the globe; all these and related issues become daunting challenges for "providing safe food for all". Hence, focused area under "food safety challenges" is primarily attributed, but not limited to, any challenge (physical, chemical, microbiological, policy, social or any other level) that will pose considerable threat to provide safe food for all, i.e. increase food- borne illnesses/diseases in the food safety congress.

Microbiological hazards are one of the most significant causes of food poisoning. An understanding of these hazards is crucial to understanding how suitable controls may be applied Food safety/quality testing is required to obtain a certificate of analysis for ready to eat and raw products at certain stages of processing Food testing technologies such as Polymerase chain-reaction (PCR) testing identifies major pathogens like E.coli0157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella and Campylobacter by detecting the organism's DNA ELFAEnzyme-Linked Fluorescent Assay (ELFA) reveals pathogens by detecting their protein. Modern food safety has its roots in Chemical Aspects methods. The aspect of food distribution in our society can be examined through the analysis of the changes in the food supply chain. Globalization in particular, has significant effects on the food supply chain by enabling scale effect in the food distribution industry. Provision of adequate amount of essential nutrients to human beings has ever been the challenge in the arena of food security. Track 8 Advances in Food Management

The food industry is constantly facing new hazards and threats, with new issues being identified on an almost daily basis. To meet these increasing challenges, our food safety management systems must also evolve. The now traditional approach of managing food safety event through prerequisite programmes and HACCP may no longer be sufficient. The food industry needs to embrace new systems, such as TACCP, to address vulnerabilities to deliberate contamination. It is considered that a holistic approach to food safety management will be most effective. Systems can only be effective where the food operation has a well-developed culture of food safety. Primary objective – food is safe and suitable for human consumption. Ensuring fair trade practices in the food trade. Follows the food chain – farm to fork. Takes into account the wide diversity of Food safety standards: CODEX activities and varying degrees of risk involved in food production. Track 9 Food safety regulations and guidelines

Modern food legislation is based on international principles and standards food is governed by a complexity of laws and regulations which set out the government’s requirements to be met by food chain operators to ensure the food is safe and of adequate quality. Generally “food law” is used to apply to legislation which regulates the production, trade and handling of food and hence covers the food safety regulations, food safety and relevant aspects of food trade. Minimum quality requirements are included in the food law to ensure the foods produced are unadulterated and are not subjected to any fraudulent practices intended to deceive the consumer. In addition, food law should cover the total chain beginning with provisions for animal feed, on-farm controls and early processing through to final distribution and use by the consumer.

Track 10 Impacts of new development in Food industry

The question of regulation, innovation and their impact on competitiveness in global markets has a high relevance for the food industry. However, little has been done to understand the effect of regulation on the capacity of such a traditional industry like the food industry to innovate and to introduce new products and services in the market. Innovation activities in the food industry can be analysed on different levels and with differing methodological approaches innovative fields in the food industry are analysed whether the existing regulatory framework has hindering or facilitating impacts on the development and introduction of new products: the use of genetic engineering approaches for food production and food processing, the field of health oriented. Functional and organic food products. In the coming years the agro-food sector is confronted with multiple new scientific approaches and technical opportunities which often have an interdisciplinary character. However, in particular SMEs of the food industry are not well prepared to profit from these developments. Food Safety Conference therefore, the creation and building-up of interfacing competencies as well as the establishment of new external knowledge and competence networks seems to be of strategic relevance for many companies of the EU food industry. In this context it is advisable to widen the knowledge base of external co-operations and include clients, retail companies, research institutes, specialized service companies as well as other companies of the food and supplying industries in such networks.

Foodomics is the study of chemical compounds in food. It is the discipline that studies food and nutrition through the application and integration of advanced omics technologies to improve consumer's well-being, health, and knowledge. Foodomics is the comprehensive, high-throughput approach for the exploitation of food science in the light of an improvement of human nutrition. In the foodomics field, researchers working in food chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, food technology, clinical sciences, and human can finally work together, with an omics approach, to reach the main objective, the optimization of human health and well-being. Applications of Foodomics include the genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and/or metabolomic study of foods for compound profiling, authenticity, and/or biomarker-detection related to food quality conference or safety; the development of new transgenic foods, food contaminants, and whole toxicity studies; new investigations on food bioactivity, food effects on human health, etc.

Food-borne disease remains a real and formidable problem in both developed and developing countries, causing great human suffering and significant economic losses. Dangerous pathogens and contaminants in food are on the increase as travel and tourism grow. Up to one third of the population of developed countries may be affected by food-borne diseases each year, and the problem is likely to be even more widespread in developing countries, where food and water-borne diarrheal diseases kill an estimated 2.2 million people each year, most of them children. In 2007 it was reported that in the United States, foodborne diseases result in 37.2 million illnesses, 228,744 hospitalizations, and 2,612 deaths annually.

The food safety testing market is projected to reach $4.07 billion by 2018. Pathogens have been the leading cause of foodborne poisoning or illness. In 2012, pathogen testing dominated the food safety testing market in which salmonella testing accounted for the major share. Increasing food contamination and outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) poisoning in Germany is expected to increase E. coli testing in the market. Germany dominated the market and is projected to be the fastest growing European food safety testing market followed by United Kingdom.
