Biography

Bonnie Buntain served as Professor of Public Health in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine from 2013 to 2015 in the Department of Ecosystem and Public Health, with a joint appointment in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary, Canada. She is one of the founding deans of that new veterinary school and served for 5 years as the Assistant Dean of Government and International Relations. Previously, she held many position over 17 years in the U.S. federal government, including Chief Public Health Veterinarian, Assistant Deputy Administer of Public Health and Sciences, and founding Director of Animal Production Food Safety in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service. In other USDA offices she was the Staff Director of Animal Care and the National Program Leader of Veterinary Extension Service. In the Food and Drug Administration she started her government career as a Clinical Reviewer of Antibiotics in Food Animals. For 10 year previously she was the sole owner and veterinarian of Oahu Equine Veterinary Clinic in Hawaii, where she lived for 30 years and received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Animal Sciences at the University of Hawaii. Dr. Buntain received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1977 at Colorado State University, Internship at Glasgow, Scotland, and Residency in Large Animal Medicine at the University of Missouri. She is a Diplomate Emeritus of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Equine Practice and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. In July, 2015, Professor Buntain was honoured as Fellow of Aberystwyth University.
